Indofest Cooking Demonstrations

Indofest Cooking Demonstrations

Our Indofest chefs have been cooking up a storm at venues around Adelaide in the lead-up to Indofest. At Foodland Frewville and Pasadena they delighted shoppers with tasty treats and friendly smiles and at the Adelaide Central Market shoppers gobbled up the food as quickly as it came out of the pan. Come to Indofest and visit the Adelaide City Council pavillion to learn how to make traditional favourites and some new dishes that you may not have tried before.

Indofest Main Stage

Indofest Main Stage

The Indofest main stage will come alive on Sunday, 1st October with music and dance from all corners of the Indonesian archipelago. Starting at 10am, DJ Mojo Hannah (Hannah Tunstill) will be at the Indofest helm tasked with getting the atmosphere pumping. Not only is our in-house DJ a master at the turntable, but staying true to her Indonesian roots, she is also a member of the Gameladies. And did we mention she is the creativity behind our new Indofest logo? Amazing talent!!

After a few years of hiatus, Indofest 2017 will see the return of gamelan to the main stage. Not just one gamelan orchestra but three! Adelaide’s oldest gamelan group, Gamelan Sekar Laras, who call the stunning Flinders University Pendopo home, will be pairing up with group Gamelan Laras Sunda to perform pieces in the gamelan tradition of Central and West Java.

Remember our DJ Hannah? Well, our third gamelan group is her turf. The Gameladies are ladies (and the occasional lad) who love gamelan. They like to play around with contemporary gamelan tunes and the occasional iconic pop song, adapting them to play on the gamelan.

There will also be plenty of dance taking place as the main stage becomes the Indofest epicentre where 54 performers from across all our Indofest kampungs will come together to bring you the extended ‘Tari Nusantara’, a 45 minute dance spectacular representing a range of dances from across the archipelago!!

The main stage is also where all the important announcements will be made throughout the day. Grab a spot early for a front seat to the Indofest Opening Ceremony. Find out why the Indonesian community comes back year after year to share their culture, and why the City of Adelaide are only too happy to have us! Stick around to see how the Indofest Schools Program has spent the last two terms bringing a touch of Indonesia to schools across South Australia. Come back later around 2pm to watch the draw of the Indofest Raffle and find out if you are the lucky winner of the four night stay at the luxurious Beji Mawang Villa in Ubud.

Last but by no means least, Rhythmnesia will set up shop on the stage bringing you a selection of traditional Indonesian dancing music and mixing it together with modern contemporary tunes. Under their watchful eye, Indofest 2017 will come to an exciting climax with everyone invited to joget-joget!!

Kampung Indofest

Kampung Indofest

Kampung Indonesia, the theme of Indofest 2017, will see the centre of Adelaide transformed into a vibrant hub with pavilions dotted around Victoria Square representing different kampung community groups, allowing visitors to ‘explore’ the diversity of Indonesia.  The kampung groups that will be calling Victoria Square home for the day are:

  • Java
  • Sumatra
  • Bali and Lombok
  • Islands of Eastern Indonesia
  • Sulawesi and Kalimantan

Members of the local Indonesian community have worked together to showcase their home regions through a variety of displays including dance, music, interactive workshops, sampling of regional cuisine, traditional games, handicrafts, costumes, textiles, local languages, dance, music, and visual art.

Take your time to wander through each kampung and get a glimpse of the different cultural groups and meet members of our local Indonesian community. Have a go at the different activities on offer, stay and chat with members of our community and experience for yourself the Indonesia beyond Bali; its diversity, beauty, and uniqueness, reflecting the richness that underpins the notion of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, Indonesia’s national motto meaning “unity in diversity”.

Melanglang Indonesia Children’s Activity Trail

Melanglang Indonesia Children’s Activity Trail

Indofest 2017’s program has been designed with children in mind. Kids aged 14 and under can collect a Melangang Indonesia Passport from the Indofest Hub. Making their way around Victoria Square, visiting each Kampung and taking part in activities, children can collect stamps for their Indofest Passport. The first 200 children to collect all stamps can return to the Hub to collect a prize.

If this isn’t enough to keep the little ones occupied, workshops suitable for children will be happening throughout the day at the Indofest Alun-alun. Activities include traditional Javanese toy making, Balinese dancing, ketupat weaving and a Saman dance workshop. Check out the Alun-alun page for more information and the workshop schedule.

Alun-alun Village Square

Alun-alun Village Square

The Indonesian word alun-alun comes from the Javanese language and refers to the large central open square found in most kampungs, towns and cities throughout Indonesia. The Indofest Alun-alun will be a hive of activity on Sunday, 1st October with a variety of workshops happening throughout the day including traditional Javanese toy making, Balinese dancing, ketupat weaving and a Saman dance workshop.

Pasar Indofest

Pasar Indofest

For generations, Indonesians have bought their food and other household goods at traditional markets known as pasar. The term pasar can refer to a gathering of tukang sayur (vendors who sell off carts which go through residential kampungs, to a rough, temporary structure where sellers gather in the early morning, to the large, multi-storey buildings in large bustling cities.

And then there is Pasar Indofest! A bustling market-place set up in the heart of Adelaide in Victoria Square for one day only on Sunday, 1st October!! Here shoppers will find retail stalls selling a selection of Indonesian goodies including kain (cloth), baju (shirts/clothes) and oleh-oleh (souvenirs). There will also be a number of information stalls. See the list below for more information.
